2012-10-16 Domowina_BriefmarkeThis year, Domowina – the Federation of Lusatian Sorbs, celebrates its 100th birthday.

Domowina is a politically independent organisation and umbrella for Sorbian associations in Lower and Upper Lusatia, Germany, and has its seat in Bautzen. It represents the interests of Sorbian people.

Today, Domowina has about 7.200 members. Its main aims are the preservation and development, the promotion and dissemination of the language, culture and traditions of the Sorbian people, their national consciousness, the community of Sorbs and its close ties to their homeland.

The Sorbian languages (serbsce, serbski) belong to the western Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages. Upper and Lower Sorbian are spoken in the region of Lusatia, in the eastern part of Germany. The Sorbs are one of the four officially recognised national minorities in Germany.
