At the end of March 2013, during its actions in Friesland, the Netherlands, the language diversity team visited the Frisian institution Afûk.
The goal of Afûk is to promote the knowledge and use of the Frisian language, and to popularise the region of Fryslân and its culture. Apart from offering language courses, Afûk publishes magazines, computer games and books in Frisian. It was particularly interesting for language diversity to hear about the ”Praat mar Frysk”-campaign of Afûk, an awareness raising campaign for the Frisian language, which aims at stimulating the use of Frisian in the first place by using the social media. Afûk is the most important actor in the region for the promotion of Frisian and an interesting partner for language diversity.
We received a very warm welcome by Afûk and had the opportunity to get to know all their employees and their specific projects. The project leaders of “Praat mar Frysk”, Sito and Mirjam, told us about the Frisian pub quiz, which would take place that following week, and the Frisian Twitter-day. Afûk was happy with the visit of the language diversity team in Friesland and reported on Facebook about the flashmob that was organised by language diversity.
Language diversity considers itself as the intermediary between Afûk and other language campaigns and would like to help Afûk and the Frisian language to become known on the European level. We recorded the wide range of promotion materials that Afûk uses in order to promote the Frisian language, such as e.g. pins, double-sided language stickers, table cards, cartoons, peppermint.
