This week the language diversity team is very busy: while part of the team is preparing in Denmark for the cultural night, the mission of the “Hungarian” team is already drawing to an end:
In the past days we visited several schools in southern Hungary, in small villages around the city of Pécs. We just arrived home from a visit to the primary school in the village of Véménd, where different minorities in Hungary are living.
We used the situation that the Youth Leader Seminar of YEN was organised near Orfű to engage some young people from YEN for multilingual backup: with a total of 15 languages and six different countries of origin we were able to deliver a lively presentation of language diversity. Thanks to the YENies we could listen to almost any of these languages from first hand and also give live reports about the minority. We are astonished about how much the youth already knew about multilingualism. In our quiz on language families in Europe not only the school students, but also the teachers were participating with pleasure and enthusiasm. At the end they received a poliglotto-folder from us with teaching materials.
The kids had fun in particular when they had to chorus our slogan “It is never too late” in Europe’s oldest language, in the Basque language.
Not just the school students were enthused, but also our YEN participants, who will give a report on their participation in our “language diversity workshop” to all their fellow seminar participants tonight. We have seen how effective school visits are, and want to go to many more schools in the future.
