  This overview deals predominantly with the challenges that the autochthonous language minorities are confronted with nowadays and on the way how language policy and language planning may help to meet these challenges from a theoretical perspective. In that regard especially the language planning potential of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is emphasised.III) Small compendium on terminology relevant in the context of language minoritiesThis compendium includes some terminology used often in linguistics on the subject of autochthonous European language minorities.
